A California State of Mind

Who has not heard of California? Who has not thought or dreamt about California?
What springs to mind when you hear the word?
If you type the word into a search engine you will find something like this (standard travel book stuff):
“California, is a western U.S. state, it stretches from the Mexican border along the Pacific for nearly 900 miles. Its terrain includes cliff-lined beaches, redwood forest, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Central Valley farmland and the Mojave Desert. The city of Los Angeles is the seat of the Hollywood entertainment industry. Hilly San Francisco is known for the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island and cable cars.”
Our most recent travels took us there, to this place so many dream of. It was not our first visit – but it was our first kid free visit – and we decided to travel agenda free. Before I had two small kids and was pregnant with number three, and again when we went we were with all three kids so agenda was very much the order of the day!
The plan.
Catch a plane. Hire a car. Drive. No -booked hotels. No ideas other that that we would avoid huge crowds and overcrowded places as far as possible, but instead we’d go in search of wild and beautiful places. Bohemian and unconventional. Off the beaten track perhaps? Who knew? We decided to follow our noses.
And she did not disappoint us. Is California a girl? I have no idea but I think maybe she is.  I know this is a kind of food blog, kind of diary, advertising platform and place where I come occasionally to share with you.
I loved our time in California so much, so this post will will share some photos with you. I may do another, a photo dump maybe for those who don’t read much but like to look at beautiful places. And I’ll do a foodie one too at some point.
When I say we were agenda free we were not quite agenda free; we had promised to hook up with some friends but there wasn’t anything concrete organised.
This is how I like to travel; organically without prescribed trips and outings. That is for another time when we are too old to risk adventure although to be honest I hope that day never comes for me. Some would say this is chaos and disorganisation but for me, this is freedom. My soul is a vagabond and it searches for art, literature, music and like-minded people. It goes without saying we’d be travelling on a shoe-string because we are not rich.
Shall we go this way or that way? Who knows? If we go this way, we will miss what lies that way, but if we go that way the same. Ah well – we can always come back!
to be honest I had a list in my notebook – of wild and beautiful places worth seeing. So I lie to you a little but I hope you’re OK with that! And we had seen beaches, red-wood forests, The Sierra Nevada Mountains, Central Valley and Mojave. Also, Hollywood, the Golden-Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. (Don’t worry we did see them again, but differently this time!) More to follow…..soon my lovely friends! x
